Experience your dream vacation in the heart of Alaska today!
We built our beautiful log home from 2004 to 2007. It is nestled among 12 acres of dense spruce and birch trees along the bank of the Chena River in North Pole Alaska. In the winter, we enjoy watching dog sleds cruise down the frozen river and observing the dancing aurora in the night sky. In the summer, we experience a front row seat to the local wildlife and take canoe trips down the river. While the home feels very secluded, it is close enough to North Pole and Fairbanks to experience all that is offered in the area. We love our home, and we know you will too!
If the Aurora is out and it’s dark and clear, you can see it from the house quite well. The back deck faces the river, and you have a great viewing location. Little or no light pollution where we are.
Another option is to drive up to one of the popular viewing locations such as Cleary Summit where you have a 360 view with no trees. About 25 miles out.
A third option, there are a number of tours available in the area. Some are overnight and others are just for the evening. They vary in price. Alaska Pointe is a short drive away, maybe 7 miles, and it looks inexpensive at 40 to 50 per person. The best place to review the tour options is to log into Explorefairbanks.com. That web site is a great resource for all activities in the area.
My opinion: if the lights are out, it's dark and it’s clear, you’re going to see them no matter where you are. What you get with the tours are tour guides to answer questions and assist with photography. You will be with others on the tour which is a plus if you tend to be more social. If you just want to stay close to the cabin, review the weather and Aurora forecast, start a fire in the fireplace, brew up your favorite beverage, prepare to stay up much of the night sitting out on the very large deck. Or you can start a fire in the outdoor fire pit and sit around that while waiting and viewing.
